Our Mission is to help students in our community live a better quality of life by being able to get rides to any activity as we partner with their families directly and assist school districts with a transportation solution for their McKinney-Vento and special needs.
The SAU’s that we serve, will be the ones that we also give back to. From school supplies, backpacks, coat drives to food baskets at the Holidays.
Growing up, my older brother, David, was diagnosed with severe autism and was placed in Paul A Dever State School in Taunton, MA. We visited him every Sunday and brought him home for the Holidays. But in 1991, the school closed down, and he went to a home in Tewksbury, MA.
With him living closer, I took him out to dinner every Thursday. Every time, folks would stare at him. I would introduce him as my older brother and then ask if they were enjoying their dinner, doing my best to make things feel normal, but mostly to protect him.
My experience with my brother profoundly impacted whom I would become. David passed from complications after a hip replacement procedure at Mass General Hospital at the age of 53. After his passing, I thought a lot about his quality of life or lack thereof.
I know that if he had been born in this day and age, there would be so many opportunities for him. Road Scholars Transportation service is my way of trying to improve the lives of others with the same need and who deserve a better quality of life.
My heart for people and seeing them not just be loved but given every opportunity possible to live their best life grew fivefold between 2009 through 2013 when my son, Danny, attended Alvirne High School, and we took in five homeless students.
Some students were homeless by choice, while others had no choice. I am happy to say that all five are doing remarkable things in their lives now.
Fast forward to last year, when I started driving for a beautiful company in New Hampshire. I became his office manager for 15 drivers and 30 students… from the first student I picked up, I knew it was exactly what I’d been searching for. I finally felt I was making a difference in each student’s life.
By the simple act of driving, I’ve found the opportunity for every student, whether they have special needs, are McKinney-Vento, or are from a Foster Care family, to experience the respect, compassion, and sense of belonging they deserve.
